A super cast iron mortar with an earlier Victorian pestle.

The mortar is First World War era.

Marked 1916 to the other side, likely indicating the year this was made.

Possibly a Gold gab ice Eisen piece.
(I gave gold for iron)

The memorable slogan “gold I gave for iron” can be traced back to Princess Marianne of Prussia who is said to have used it in 1813 to urge the citizens of Prussia to give up their gold jewellery to finance the war against Napoleon.

A great collectable for anyone with an interest in war time memorabilia.
