An antique wooden money box featuring a charming Scottish “Mary” theme, likely dating from the early to mid-20th century.
This characterful piece is hand-painted and full of folk-art appeal, making it both a functional item and a highly decorative collectible.
The design depicts a traditional Scottish figure dressed in Highland attire, complete with tam hat, tartan clothing and sporran, standing beside a “Bank” building. The front is boldly marked “MARY,” which is assume is a reference to Mary Queen of Scots. A coin slot is cleverly incorporated into the roof of the bank, reinforcing its original purpose as a savings or collection box.
The user of will place a coin on the plate being held by the character. The character will then tilt to the side and the coin will fall through the slot into the bank.
