Antique Wooden 19th Century Secret Puzzle Box / Money Storage Chest c.1895
An antique Scandinavian wooden puzzle box, dating to around circa 1895 based on the interesting handwritten note inside the box explaining its origins.
The note inside reads 'given to me by a Swedish carpenter at Clifton Hall Liscard 1895 W H Newbrook'
These cleverly designed boxes were traditionally used to store money or small valuables and could only be opened by sliding or positioning the wooden sections in the correct sequence.
Crafted from wood, the box features multiple sliding panels and shaped wooden guides on the lid which form part of the puzzle mechanism. Without knowing the correct method, the box remains securely closed, making it both a practical storage item and an entertaining mechanical puzzle.
How to open the box:
Pull back the three central wooden levers on the top which will allow the box lid to slide. Once done one of the levers on the end pull down which will allow the whole top to open to the slide so the contents inside can be revealed.
Puzzle boxes such as this were popular in Scandinavian and Northern European folk craftsmanship, combining woodworking skill with playful ingenuity. Today they are highly collectible as examples of early mechanical puzzles and secret storage boxes.
