Antique Victorian Oak Wooden Desktop Stationery Box / Writing Cabinet with Key
C. 1890 - 1900
A high quality antique mahogany stationery box, dating to the late 19th / early 20th century, offering both elegance and practicality in a classic Victorian design. Beautifully crafted, this piece reflects a time when handwritten correspondence was an essential daily ritual. The box has a working lock and key to provide secure storage.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a traditional fitted interior, complete with multiple compartments for storing stationery, envelopes, post cards and other writing accessories. On the interior of the lid is storage for pens and writing tools, along with a pen slope at the base. There are two small drawers present, perfect for holding small stationery and general objects.
The front has two fitted, brass card holders - one of which still contains Engagements cards containing days of the week.
The drop down front opens fully to reveal a writing slope, providing ample amounts of writing surface space.
Externally, the box is complemented by a shield cartouche on the lid, often intended for initials or inscription. This will has never been monogrammed.
Displaying a rich patina, this writing slope is as decorative as it is functional and ideal for collectors, writers or as a desk accessory in a home office or workspace.
