Antique Victorian JC & J Field Lychnophylax Glass Candle Guard Complete Set Box

A rare and complete Victorian lighting set, featuring a wooden storage crate filled with original glass candle protectors and its instruction leaflets.
The glass candle guards were manufactured by the well recognised British firm J.C. and J. Field of London. Inside are the glass components, named The Lychnophylax.
These glass guards were fitted over candles to shield the flames from drafts and prevent hot wax from dripping onto floors - they were mostly used in churches, theatres and manor halls before electricity was widely accessible.
The wooden transit crate is made with corner iron brackets and twine on the lid. It features stencilled lettering across the panels - stamped with the name G. Nichols. The top lid reads Glass With Care, and the end panel is marked C.G. 4. Inside, the box contains a built in wooden grid designed to keep each piece of glass safely separated.
The instructions show diagrams and detailing directions for using the guards with premium Victorian waxes like Whitehall Sperm, China Wax and Gold Medal Ozokerit.
This is a wonderfully preserved piece of that makes for an incredible display item or collectors item.

Condition: Good order. Some glass shows sign of use with was and smoke residue but most look unused.
