Antique Victorian Country House Wooden Letter / Post Box Storrs Hall Windermere

C.1900

A unusual large floor standing country house letter box with a purchase receipt / information sheet and a polaroid from 2007 when it was sold through London based traders Patricia Harvey Antiques for £750.

The information sheet informs us that this letter box was previously used at Storrs Hall, Windermere, UK - Storrs Hall is a Grade II* listed Georgian mansion built in the 1790s by Sir John Legard. It was transformed in 1808 by wealthy merchant John Bolton, whose legacy has ties to the slave trade. Operating as a hotel since 1892, it remains a renowned luxury destination on the shores of Lake Windermere.

These types of letter boxes where common in hotel receptions during the late 19th and early 20th century for guests to deposit there letters and postcards to loved ones from their holidays, long before the days of simply being able to check in by call or message. The hotel staff would then normally send these off for the guests by emptying the in-house post box and taking the post office.

A really great item with lots of history - Would be great to see it back in a hotel for use or even just display within a home setting.
