A charming turn of the century tabletop Polyphon music box, housed in a beautifully figured walnut case with hinged lid and original interior fittings.
The mechanism is in good working order, supplied with a selection of 28 original metal discs, each producing a clear, resonant tone characteristic of these finely engineered instruments. The interior retains the original winding crank and comb, with excellent sound quality for its age.
The lid features a classic coloured image depicting musical cherubs / angels playing instruments under the "Polyphon" script.
When no disc is placed the machine, the mechanisms can be seen along with a brass plaque reading "Polyphony". Also visible is the mechanical serial number "141718" which shows it was manufactured by Polyphon Musikwerke in the Leipzig, Germany factory dating around 1901-1902.
An attractive and fully functional example of a 19th century mechanical music box, equally appealing to collectors and decorative interiors alike. A great piece.
