Antique Leather Motorcycle Helmet / The Corker Helmet by J. Compton c.1950

This antique leather motorcycle helmet, known as “The Corker” by J. Compton & Sons, dates to circa 1950 and is a great example of early British motorcycling headwear.

Produced during post-war motorcycling, this helmet reflects the craftsmanship and practicality that defined mid 20th century riding gear, making it both a highly collectible display piece and a striking vintage fashion accessory.

Constructed from genuine leather with its original cork lining, the helmet is black in colour. The overall shape remains well defined, retaining the distinctive low profile silhouette that made The Corker popular with riders of the time.

The makers mark can be found internally, printed on the canvass webbing harness.

“The Corker,” helmet was produced in Britain by J. Compton Sons & Webb Ltd, a London maker of leather and protective headwear. The design reflects early motorcycle safety equipment, featuring a cork inner shell covered in leather, chosen at the time for its lightweight properties and basic impact absorption. These helmets were widely worn during the post-war boom in motorcycling and scooter culture, before the introduction of modern fibreglass and plastic helmets.

Highly sought after by motorcycle memorabilia collectors, classic bike enthusiasts and vintage fashion collectors, this helmet is ideal for display, photoshoots, film and theatre or collections
