Antique Large Size Olive Wood Sorrento Ware Italian Puzzle Box With Key c.1900
A fantastic olive wood Sorrento puzzle box from the turn of the century.
A rare LARGE sized example - at just over 31cm X 22cm
This secret box features a secret key hole and secret storage compartment. The lockable marquetry top depicts two ladies in traditional dresses, one of which is sitting on a rock playing an instrument alongside a gentleman. The other woman can be seen dancing barefoot with a gentleman. This wonderful scene is set within a parquetry border.
The front of the box shows the spines of 13 small books sandwiched between to larger books.
To reveal the secret keyhole, simply push back the base of the box and slide down the 7th small book spine. Once you have unlocked the box, you are then able to slide forward the righthand side of the base, revealing the secret compartment.
This box would have been used for storage, likely jewellery and best items. The secret compartment would have offered extra security and a convenient place to hide away something you wouldn't want someone stumbling upon!
This box is lined with a red cloth, complimenting the colour of the olive wood perfectly.
This is great example of this item and is larger than average, making it a great collectors piece. This would look fantastic on a dressing table in a bedroom or displayed on a bookcase / cabinet.
