The chairs rest upon the bamboo & metal frame.
The metal frame is original to the piece - I have seen other examples with the same frame but it does appear to have maybe added extra metal bracket supports and new screws to strengthen it up.

The chairs simply rest upon the frame with cup shaped support to match the wooden frame of the chairs. We have tied them on to keep them more secure too.
