A fascinating and rare antique wooden double sided eye test paddle & mirror, sometimes referred to as a hornbook-style optometrist’s tool. This beautifully crafted piece was originally used by early 20th-century opticians or ophthalmologists during vision testing and examination.
The paddle is made from solid wood, displaying a lovely aged patina that speaks to its age and use. One side features a mirror, used for patient self-focus and alignment during eye examinations and the other side has an eye test printed out. The handle allowed the practitioner to hold and position it easily, switching between the mirror and eye test quickly and easily. Its elegant simplicity and tactile design make it an appealing example of early medical and optical instruments.
Now a wonderful collector’s item or decorative piece, this antique hornbook-style paddle would look superb displayed in a cabinet of curiosities or part of a vintage medical collection.
