Antique Chinese Buddhist Temple Bench Elm Wood / Opera Bench / 19th Century


Circa 1890 


A wonderful rare example of Chinese opera bench, carved in elm and dating to the late 19th century. It was crafted in the Shanxi Province of China and it would originally have been used for a family to sit together during a theatrical or musical performance in an opera house. The Shanxi Province was renowned for plays and musical entertainment and this style of carved bench was popular in this region. Chinese traditional opera first occurred in 319AD, these performances were were very popular and perfect for large family outings. Families could sit together to watch their favourite performers.


The bench is elegant in shape with nicely carved detailing typical of the period. 

It has a charming aged patina and colour to the elm timber all over. 

From the side you can see the sweeping curve of the back for added comfort - A true sign of quality craftsmanship. 


These super sought after benches now make for great interior design pieces. 

Perfect for a hallway or living room space.
