A wonderful piece of early 20th century retail history, this antique wooden display box once held the sweet treats "Marzipan walnuts" which were incredibly popular across Europe in the late Victorian era through to the mid 20th century.
The confectionery treat was an almond paste marzipan sandwiched between walnuts. Because marzipan was expensive and walnuts a seasonal treat, these were highly popular and sought after around the Christmas season.
Sweet shop owners would have purchased this box and displayed the sliding lid behind the open box - showcasing the coloured advertising paper. The top of the sliding lid reads "Chocolat Glasgow".
Perfect now used as a decorative storage piece, a prop or simply displayed as a vintage advertising collectible. A great interior design or collectors item.

Condition: Nice clear paper label to inside of box lid with some loss around the edges. Colours are nice on it. Rare example. Box has a split running the entire way round - I am not sure if this is just the way it has been made in two halves or if it has been repaired but it is in solid useable order.
