A highly collectable and rare, late Victorian advertising statue / figurine for the Pears Soap Company.
The statue is a copy of a sculpture by Giovanni Focardi, an Italian artist, which was displayed in a Paris Exhibition in 1878. Pears Soap purchased the right to reproduce the sculpture for advertising campaigns.
The figure depicts an elderly woman scrubbing behind a young boys ear with the soap with a large bowl of water at their feet. The are standing on a black base which reads "From the original Pears Soap Sculpture" and "You Dirty Boy" across the front.
The sculpture is made from plaster and would have been distributed and displayed in general stores and pharmacies that stocked the soap - encouraging and promoting sales during the late 1800's / early 1900's.
A wonderful collectors item that would look great displayed in a cabinet or sideboard. Perfect for anyone interested in antique advertising, shop displays and antique statues / figurines.
Would also add character and charm to any antique interior setting. A really lovely item.
