Antique Advertising Theatre Poster for Greatest Clown Carnival in Bristol c.1930

Early to mid 20th Century

A rare and highly collectible 1930s theatre advertising poster promoting the “Greatest Clown Carnival” held at the Bristol Hippodrome

Dated Monday 26th January 1931, this striking period showbill captures the golden age of variety theatre and live entertainment in Britain.

The poster advertises two evening performances at 6:20pm and 8:30pm, featuring a lively line-up of 10 clowns alongside a range of comedy acts including Murray & Mooney and Haynes and Beck. Additional entertainment highlights include “Indian sports and pastimes,” reflecting the eclectic and internationally themed variety shows popular at the time.

Further period detail includes promotion of British Movietone News screenings and Saturday educational film programmes for young audiences at the price of sixpence, offering a fascinating glimpse into early cinema and public entertainment culture.

Visually bold and historically rich, this original theatre poster represents a vibrant British entertainment history. Its bold coloured typography, layout and promotional language are typical of the era, making it a strong display piece for collectors of theatrical memorabilia, vintage advertising or circus history.

A rare survivor from the interwar period—full of character, insight and strong visual impact. A great decor piece, especially if you live in the Bristol area.
