This charming antique Tanqueray Gordon & Co (now Gordons Gin) pottery match holder and striker is a fine example of classic stoneware advertising.
Tanqueray Gordon & Co is a historic British gin company formed in 1898 through the merger of Charles Tanqueray & Co. (founded 1830) and Gordon & Co. (founded 1769). Today, the company operates as a subsidiary of the multinational alcoholic beverage leader.
This exampled advertise the business address at 132 Goswell Road in Clerkenwell, London. This is the historic former site of the Tanqueray Gordon & Co. (Gordon's Gin) distillery but was destroyed during there blitz of World War II.
Used to hold matches, it was designed to advertise the Tanqueray Gordon & Co brand.
This match stick holder / striker would have sat countertop in a bar, pub or restaurant to advertise the company and increase exposure to encourage business.
