Antique Advertising - Packham's Lime Wine Ceramic Match Stick Holder & Striker
Early 20th Century
This charming antique Packham's Lime Wine match holder and striker is a lovely example of classic ceramic advertising.
Used to hold matches while advertising the beverage. This match stick holder / striker would have sat countertop in a bar, pub or restaurant to increase exposure encourage sales.
It features a two tone design with a crackle glazed cream top which has black printed text reading "Packham's Lime Wine" and textured brown lower half acting as a 'strike anywhere' match striker.
During the late Victorian and Edwardian period, wines made from ingredients other than grapes became very popular, such as lime, elderberry and orange. They were considered refreshing, lower alcohol drinks and were often promoted from their 'medical' benefits due to being citrus based and aiding digestion and being a source of Vitamin C. Because of this, it was often favoured with sailors and the British Navy in an attempt to prevent scurvy.
Ideal as a unique display piece or for use in a period-inspired setting, it adds a touch of character to any home or collection. Perfect to hold matches still, the piece would look great upon a mantle, fireplace, sideboard or table for ease of lighting fires and candles.
