Antique Advertising - Large 1930s W. H. Smith Painted Newsboy Hanging Shop Sign
C.1930
A distinctive and finely crafted W. H. Smith painted 'Newsboy' hanging sign, set within a pale painted oak frame featuring elegant fluted gilt detailing.
The iconic W. H. Smith newsboy emblem was designed for Smith’s in 1905 by the artist Septimus E. Scott (1880-1966). Scott went on to design railway posters and illustrations including for other well-known brands such as Rowntree and Wincarnis.
The sign is fitted at the top with the original iron hanging hooks, while the underside boasts a pair of ornate wrought iron brackets, lending both decorative charm and functional strength for hanging.
At the centre of the iron base brackets hangs a painted metal English heraldic shield, boldly displaying three gilt lions passant on a red ground.
An evocative and nostalgic piece of signage, rich in character and ideal for collectors, decorators, or retail display.
This truly wonderful piece would have been wall-mounted on a bracket in store.
