Antique Advertising Ceramic Match Striker / Puck Captain Webb Match Stick Holder
Victorian / Edwardian era c.1900
A lovely collectable item, this ceramic "puck" match striker was made to advertise Captain Webb matches.
The striker is shaped with a hollow centre to hold the matches and a rough textured body to strike and light matches.
The top reads in black lettering "Captain Webb Puck Matches" which is advertising matches and matchboxes produced by Bryant & May.
Captain Matthew Webb was a Victorian celebrity and was the first recorded person to swim across the English Channel. After his achievement, Captain Webb licensed his name to consumer goods, the matchboxes being one of them.
The base underside of the striker is marked "MINTON" which was a 19th century English ceramic producer from Stoke-on-Trent.
A great collectors item or piece to sit with matches. Would look great with other advertising / ceramic collections or act as a decorative accent sitting fireside.
Dimensions: Height 7cm x Diameter 10cm
Condition: Small chip to the underside of base. Small touch up repair to inside top rim (please see last image).
