The company was founded in 1842 by George Bassett in Sheffield. The original 1842 directory listed him as a "wholesale confectioner, lozenge maker and British wine trader"—a common combination for Victorian tradesmen. By 1852, business was booming, and he opened a dedicated factory on Broad Street. Bassett's became most famous for a product created entirely by accident In 1899.  A sales representative named Charlie Thompson was presenting individual trays of different liquorice and cream sweets to a client. He accidentally tripped and scrambled all the sweets together. The client loved the chaotic mix, leading to the creation and mass production of Liquorice Allsort.
